SCMC Now Offers the Next Generation in Breast Screening: HALO™
The
hospital is one of the first in California to offer HALO™,
a breast cancer screening test that is to breast cancer detection
what the PAP smear was and is to cervical cancer detection. In
addition to its digital mammography capability, this gives the
hospital another powerful tool for early detection in the fight
against breast cancer.
"Thanks to the generous donation of this equipment by one
of Orange County's own – Laguna Legacy – we are able
to give our patients the highest level of screenings for early
breast cancer detection,” said Timothy M. Gustafson, Director
of Medical Imaging for the hospital. “Technological advances
in early detection such as the HALO™ are what makes South
Coast Medical Center now truly state-of-the-art."
The HALO™ detects early pre-cancerous cell changes within
breast ducts – an area of the breast where breast cancers
typically begin. Whereas previous screenings for breast cancer
began with mammograms for women age 40 and beyond, the HALO™ test
can be used to screen many years before a woman’s first mammogram.
In addition, HALO™ looks for cellular abnormalities whereas
other screens are finding lesions that have been growing for years.
HALO™ is the first and only fully automated, noninvasive
method for screening “asymptomatic women”. There are
no needles or biopsies used for the test and it takes only minutes
to perform the procedure.
The test is available through SCMC’s Radiology Department,
as well as on-campus gynecologist offices for under $100 (The test
is not covered by insurance, but pathology analysis part of it is covered
by insurance). To make your appointment for a HALO screening, you
