South Coast Medical Center Goes Green

South Coast Medical Center stays ahead of the crowd as it rolls out new Earth-friendly food containers. Thanks to Jerome Rafoth, SCMC’s Director of Nutritional Services, the hospital has been developing ways to contribute to the good of the environment by discontinuing the use of Styrofoam and plastic utensils.

By now you’ve seen these new containers. What you may not know is how beneficial they are to the environment. Made up of a common sugar byproduct, they are petroleum-free, contain no forest products and offer a renewable and environmentally friendly option to Styrofoam – in short, they are biodegradable. And what about those new utensils? Made from a blend of corn and potato starch, these biodegradable utensils are heat resistant, shatter proof and will not splinter.

So, the next time you enjoy a meal in the cafeteria, take a moment to appreciate the efforts of Jerome, and be proud that your hospital cares so much about YOUR environment.
