South Coast Medical Center ranks among the four top-rated hospitals in Orange County, according to a hospital-quality article that appeared in the OC Register on November 16, 2003.

The article profiled an Orange County Hospital Report Card, featuring scores from all 26 Orange County hospitals, and South Coast Medical Center earned a four-star rating – the highest rating achievable.

The report card measured a variety of quality indicators including mortality, adverse outcome, RN hours, disciplined doctors, Joint Commission percentile and lawsuits. To view a copy of the full report card, click here.

The four top-rated hospitals in Orange County are South Coast Medical Center, Hoag Memorial Hospital, Saddleback Memorial Medical Center and UCI Medical Center.

A reporter from the Register spoke with dozens of patients at half the hospitals analyzed. Here’s an excerpt from the article featuring comments from a mother of a patient at South Coast Medical Center.

Catherine Estanislau, left, mother of Lisa Taylor, right, and sister Brooke banter with Lisa during therapy at South Coast Medical Center’s Sub-Acute unit. Lisa is being treated for a traumatic brain injury. The hospital earned a four-star rating.

“Catherine Estanislau, whose daughter Lisa Taylor was treated for severe brain injuries at South Coast was extremely pleased with the hospital. Taylor, who had been in a car accident and spent several months in a coma, was unable to walk or talk when she was transferred to South Coast … After seven months at South Coast, Taylor was alert, talking and walking …

‘There is a lot of love and caring up there,’ says Estanislau adding that the staff at South Coast took care of her daughter like she was the only one on the floor.”
