Eating Disorders Defined: Binge Eating

Binge Eating Disorder is relatively new in terms of recognized eating disorders. It is characterized by frequent episodes of uncontrolled overeating.

Statistics

Did you know that...

  • Approximately 25 percent of obese people suffer from Binge Eating Disorder?
  • Of those suffering from Binge Eating Disorder, 60 percent are female and 40 percent are male?
  • Many who have this disorder also suffer from depression?

Binge Eating can lead to some extreme health problems that are associated with clinical obesity. Here are a few that can occur:

  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol levels
  • Heart disease as a result of elevated triglyceride levels
  • Secondary diabetes
  • Gallbladder disease

Symptoms

Symptoms can include the following:

  • Eating large quantities in short periods of time without feeling hungry or full
  • Eating alone
  • Feelings of shame or guilt after a binge
  • Eating large quantities rapidly, without really tasting or enjoying the food
  • Feeling “out of control” during binges
