Psychiatric Program

The Psychiatric Program has been designed to incorporate a number of successful treatment modalities into comprehensive, flexible and individualized mental health treatment programs.

Our treatment approach is based on a "therapeutic community" philosophy, where patients actively engage in treatment under the guidance of a comprehensive team of doctors, therapists and nurses.

Through this therapeutic interactive process, patients learn to better understand themselves and begin accepting responsibility for their own emotional well-being. This process provides opportunities for patients to practice effective alternatives for managing their lives.

Continuity of Care

Our program is based on an individualized treatment model consisting of a three-part approach. Admission: Evaluation and orientation to the inpatient or partial hospitalization programs; Therapy: Participation in individual, group, family and activity therapies, and Return to the Community: Planning for aftercare and discharge.

The Treatment Staff

The Psychiatric Program staff members are qualified, caring mental health professionals who demonstrate a commitment to fostering change in those people who have been affected by mental health issues. Psychiatrists, psychologists, marriage and family therapists, social workers and psychiatric nurses all work with patients and families to achieve a more productive, happier lifestyle.

Therapy

The patient participates in a variety of individual and group therapeutic treatment activities to develop effective life skills. These newly identified skills are practiced in a variety of real-life situations that enhance the desired change.

The goals of the therapeutic process are short-term stabilization, transition back into the community, continuing care and support. Different levels of care including inpatient and partial hospitalization are utilized for patients to receive appropriate and cost-effective care.

Inpatient Care

For individuals who need an intensive level of care and a safe treatment environment to achieve a higher level of functioning, the Psychiatric Program offers inpatient treatment.

Each treatment plan is individualized to address patient goals and objectives toward rapid stabilization and return to the community. The inpatient treatment consists of:

  • Comprehensive medical, psychological and psychiatric evaluation
  • Multi-disciplinary treatment team
  • Individual, group, family, and activities therapy
  • Dual diagnosis treatment
  • Eating Disorder Treatment
  • Co-dependency groups
  • Stress and anger management
  • Exercise and nutritional counseling
  • Aftercare
  • Clergy

Partial Hospitalization

The partial hospitalization program is available for those who need a therapeutic structure but do not need 24-hour care. The partial hospitalization program is based on the inpatient treatment plan of care.

Individualized Treatment

Upon admission to the mental health programs at South Coast Medical Center, patients are assigned a treatment team. Team members work closely with the patient, family members and the referral source to build trust and create a comfortable learning environment that is essential to change.

After an orientation, the patient and the treatment team begin an assessment to identify and explore the issues that will lead to improvement. The initial assessment, in conjunction with the orientation process, helps the team formulate an individual treatment plan, specific to the patient's needs.

Return to the Community

As patients progress, re-integration into the community is an important goal. In preparing for their return to home and work, the treatment team including the referral source, the family and the patient, work together to determine the best approach for continuing progress.

Referral Source

All referring mental health professionals are involved in treatment planning, management and on-going care of their patient. Applications for medical staff privileges are available to licensed, qualified clinicians.

health plan Coverage

Most major health plans will cover the cost of treatment because the Psychiatric Program is part of a Joint Commission accredited, community, not-for-profit hospital. The Psychiatric Program will be happy to confirm the extent of individual health plan coverage prior to admission.
