The SCMC Laboratory is dedicated to providing both patients and
physicians with accurate diagnostic testing by utilizing state-of-the-art
equipment. It offers both clinical
pathology and anatomic
pathology.
The laboratory at SCMC is conveniently located on the lobby level
of the hospital, next to the operating room, radiology and Same
Day Surgery. It is licensed by the State of California and accredited
by the College of American Pathologists (CAP) and the Joint Commission.
What is a pathologist?
A pathologist is a physician specialist who has five years of post-medical
school training in laboratory medicine. A few pathologists will
continue their training for another year or two in order to sub-specialize
in a field of interest.
A pathologist’s duties:
- Examine all tissue removed during surgery
- Provide consultations for surgeons
- Examine tissue submitted from doctors’ offices
- Interpret cervical PAP smears and body fluids
- Perform bone marrow biopsies and aspirations
- Be involved in hospital committees including cancer committees,
which insure the highest quality of medical care in the hospital
- Act as medical director of clinical laboratory
